Transportation

Getting to work
An easy and safe commute to and from work is important to everyone, and that includes people with disabilities. Assisting your employees with viable transportation options makes good business sense and will help you find and maintain talented workers.
Providing transportation benefits to your employees has many rewards, including:
- Attracting and retaining workers
- Reducing payroll taxes
- Increasing customer access to goods and services
- Expanding service hours
- Reducing gas emissions and conserving energy
- Demonstrating company support of the work-life balance
- Supporting public transit
- Enhancing your corporate image as an environmentally and worker friendly company.
Helpful tips
Here are some tips for designing a program that offers transportation benefits to your employees:
- Participate in a Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefit program to help workers set aside pre-tax dollars to cover transit or vanpool costs. Your company may also subsidize and deduct transportation costs as an employee benefit.
- Partner with local transportation providers to educate employees about alternative commuting options.
- Become a member of a transportation management association, a nonprofit membership organization that represents employers and business leaders seeking to ease traffic congestion and reduce reliance on single-occupant commuting.
- Encourage ridesharing among employees by sponsoring carpools, vanpools or shuttles.
- Designate a staff person to act as an Employee Transportation Coordinator.
- Partner with local employers to form a transportation consortium that supports shared ride options and/or discounted transit passes for employees.
- Offer telecommuting and flex-time schedules to help reduce traffic congestion and related air pollutants.
The Community Transportation Association of America created a Transportation Toolkit for the Business Community to help businesses assist employees with their transportation needs. You can view the toolkit by clicking here
