Coaching for success in the workplace

A job coach or employment specialist provides and coordinates support to help you succeed at work.

A job coach may serve as a trainer, advocate, and facilitator. He or she may also act as a consultant to your employer by providing extra training and support you need.

Job coaching activities may include:

  • on-the-job assessment and training
  • helping you learn the rules, customs and procedures in the workplace
  • helping you get to know co-workers and supervisors
  • offering guidance about disclosing your disability and requesting accommodations

Support may be performed at the job site or may occur away from the workplace. Job coaching often fades out as an employee becomes more independent in the work environment.
