Learning the workplace culture

Every workplace has its own way of doing things.

If you’re a newcomer, you will need to learn what is acceptable, what is unacceptable, and what is expected. Here are some things to consider:

  • Do other employees dress casual or more formal? Are there certain days of the week when people are more casual? For example, some organizations designate Fridays as “Casual Day”.
  • When are coffee breaks?
  • Are birthdays celebrated?
  • Are visitors allowed at work?

Asking co-workers or a supervisor to explain the work environment will help you adjust to your new setting.
