Brian
I began my job search after graduating from college in 1999. As a long-term patient of UMass Memorial Health, I felt a strong desire to give back to the organization that had supported me. This led me to start volunteering in biomedical media, hoping to one day join the organization professionally. In May 2023, I was thrilled to be hired as a Switchboard Operator. I'm now eager to grow within UMass Memorial and explore opportunities for advancement.
Benefits Counseling
I am a member of the BAMSI Brain Injury Community Center in Worcester and an employee recommended Work Without Limits. This is where I met benefits counselor Marjorie Longo, who assisted me with paperwork, forms, and appeals. When my benefits were terminated and I went back in pay status, Marjorie assisted me in contacting Social Security to get it all corrected and lessen the overpayment.
My Challenges:
- It was challenging finding a company that would hire me. I need certain accommodations. It was a lot of trial and error. I kept knocking on doors and applying for positions that would suit me and my disability. I never gave up, and UMass Memorial has been the only organization to accommodate my needs.
- Sometimes I'm treated differently due to my disability. I learn at a slower pace, so there are times I'm told to limit my responsibilities.

Brian’s Advice
For persons with disabilities:
“Don't give up!”
For employers:
"Give them a chance."
My Motivations:
- I hated being on disability. I had no money, and I wanted more for my life.
- My fiancé has been a grounding force and has always believed in me.
My Goal: I would like to advance my career within UMass Memorial and work there until I am ready to retire!
