In 2009, I graduated high school with honors, and in 2016, I graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English and Psychology from The College of St. Rose.

I am deafblind and rely on Braille. Unfortunately, I encountered a lot of challenges navigating online job applications, particularly due to inaccessible features like reCAPTCHA.

In 2021, I connected with Liz, a counselor from the New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB),  who became an invaluable support. She helped me explore opportunities in journalism and writing and provided crucial assistance throughout my job search.

I’d always loved books, and I am a giant bookworm. All my life, I aspired to work at the New York State Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL), which is where I got my Braille books since I was 6 years old.  I worked there for a couple of months when I was a teenager.

In 2022, with my mother’s assistance, I discovered two job openings at TBBL and promptly submitted my resume and cover letter.

To my surprise, I secured an interview and received support from NYSCB, including practice interview sessions and interpreter services for the virtual interview.

During the interview, I conveyed my genuine passion for working with Braille books and helping others experience the joy of reading.  I was offered the job of office assistant 1 (reader advisor) at TBBL, marking the beginning of my employment journey.

Recognizing the importance of properly managing my Social Security disability benefits, I sought assistance from the Work Without Limits Employment Network, where Marjorie Longo provided valuable guidance on reporting income and securing work-related accommodations and incentives. She also helped me get my blind designation set, report my income, make sure my Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) coverage would continue, apply for Social Security and work-related accommodations such as an employer subsidy. Marjorie was very helpful and sweet.

On the job, there has been a very evident inclusive environment. Both of my supervisors, Jane and Shawn, have been supportive and accommodating, contributing to a positive work experience. My colleagues have also been instrumental in my transition to my reader advisor role.
